Sweden July 26 - Aug 05 2012

First we went into the Swedish wood.

Beautiful Ekeby was full of things growing: mushrooms, berries, produce from the vegetable plots, flowers, ferns, pine trees, snakes, mosquitos.

And bees, lots of them, making what turned out to be lots of honey. More than 80 kilos from 3 hives over the season. The "novice" beekeeper should not be ashamed of herself, as they say in Sweden.

Also chickens, 4 total producing on average only 2 eggs per day (ok, one was male) but generating significant entertainment.

From Ekeby onto Swedish waters: Stockholm built on Lake Mälaren; Birka, site of the largest Viking-era settlement, further west into the lake; later east to Gällnö, into the archipelago watered by the Baltic Sea.

We heard a lot about Vikings (the warrior class of the day) and the Viking era, saw a restored 16th century Swedish warship that sank on its maiden voyage, spent a day on the archipelago, had wonderful food and wine. We enjoyed immensely.

Argentina in Fort Worth

The friendship shirt
Last night in the parking garage of our building, we met Mauricio, an Argentine from Lanus, in the provincia of Buenos Aires just south of the capital city.  It turns out that Mauricio lives eight stories above us, on the 19th floor.

The catalyst for our meeting was the shirt Kurt was wearing, a going-away gift from our friends Lola and Tati in Buenos Aires. Mauricio is a fan of Racing (pronunced raw-sing), one of the top-league futbol clubs in Argentina. He told us he's not seen many Racing shirts in the 20 years he's lived in the U.S.

Lola and the longhorns
Coincidentally, shirt-gifting Lola spent last weekend with us in Fort Worth en route back to Buenos Aires from Milwaukee. Linda took her for a quick tour of the Fort Worth Stockyards on Monday and the morning "parade" of the Fort Worth herd.

To complete the Argentine connection, this Friday night the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (of which we are members) is presenting "Tango at the Modern," with both traditional and nuevo tango music. The museum's excellent Café Modern is featuring a special Argentine dinner paired with some of the country's best wines. Of course we'll be there! Perhaps we'll invite our new friend Mauricio.

Fort Worth, Texas

Jeff, Kate, Lauren & Joey
We pulled up roots in Buenos Aires and arrived to our apartment in Fort Worth August 16. The 107-degree heat was a welcome change from the wet cold of the porteño winter that seemed to be dragging on forever this year. Or perhaps it was just an objective correlative for our mixed emotions about leaving what had been home for more than three years.

In any event, we are back in the Lone Star State while our new home in Panamá is completed. Already we've enjoyed several opportunities for visiting with favorite son Joey and favorite nuera Lauren, including at the baby shower they hosted for their friends Kate and Jeff. And that, after all, was the primary reason for relocating. Things are working out.
